On a glorious sunny day at Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver, BC, we gathered together for a meaningful beach cleanup in honor of World Oceans Day on June 8th. With an incredible turnout of volunteers, the day was filled with positivity, community spirit, and a shared passion for our oceans.
The event kicked off with a special water quality testing session led by Praise from Water Rangers. We ventured down to the shoreline to test the ocean's pH levels, discovering a slightly acidic reading of 7, likely influenced by factors such as rain, nearby drainage, and varying weather conditions. While the pH was lower than ideal (8.2), the nitrogen and oxygen levels tested within normal ranges, with optimal oxygen levels thriving in the cooler beach temperatures.
Following the insightful testing, volunteers eagerly engaged in the beach cleanup itself. Armed with gloves, bags and buckets, we combed the sands, uncovering a variety of debris including cigarette butts, plastic straws, and bottle caps. Each piece collected was meticulously sorted and documented, contributing valuable data to Ocean Wise's Shoreline Cleanup initiative. This data plays a crucial role in identifying trends and informing efforts to combat plastic pollution through initiatives like the Dirty Dozen.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ocean Wise for sponsoring this impactful event during Ocean Week, and to Shoreline Cleanup for their invaluable support in organizing and uniting communities for cleaner shores. Special thanks also to Water Rangers for their expertise in water system awareness and insightful contributions throughout the day.
Together, we celebrated a successful day of action, fostering new connections and deepening our commitment to ocean conservation on World Oceans Day. Here's to many more moments of community, stewardship, and appreciation for our beautiful oceans.
